On the Road Again

Well, he's on the road again and I'm left here with nothing to do. My husband drives this heavy duty tow truck. Lots of times he has to go out of state for his job. People think it's strange when I tell them that my tow truck driving husband has to go all over the states on runs. They're thinking of the regular tow trucks you see on the street every day and I have a hard time describing the truck he drives and what he does with it. He does the roll over accidents, tows semi trucks and busses and hauls stuff all over the place. When 9/11 happened, he had to go to New York to help out FEMA bringing all sorts of stuff the emergency crews needed for the job of search and recover and then the clean up afterwards. When the hurricanes hit New Orleans, he had to go down with generators and things that FEMA needed in that disaster. He was three and a half weeks driving back and forth in all the effected states in the area bringing them the things they needed at the time. Now he's taking a de-icer truck down to Mississippi Airport. Sometimes, when he goes on runs that only last a few days, I go with him. Unfortunately, I took last week off instead of this week so I couldn't go with him on this run. So I decided to clean out the laundry room on my day off today. That's the room that is a catch all for everything that we're too lazy to put where it actually belongs at the time, so we just throw it in there until whenever. Well, too much stuff was accumulating in that room, so since I didn't have anything to do and my husband is out of town, I decided to get to work in the laundry room disaster area. Oh, what fun.

I read a story in the Wall Street Journal once about how trucking companies, eager to lure more drivers, are hiring husband-and-wife teams. Now truck stops are catering to them.

I don't know if I could do that, though. I'd end up doing all the driving.

Thats a big rig. I watched a special on them one time on some channel I can't remember. Amazing vehicles. The dreaded laundry room eh... with the weather we've been having lately it might just feel like spring cleaning.

Now there's an interesting job. I don't think I could handle dealing with the inconsiderate drivers out there. I know one thing--I definitely wouldn't bring my wife to my place of employment. You understand.

I'd never heard of the job before but I guess we must have something similar. I'm betting being a truck driving in the UK is a lot easier, less ground to cover.

You're a brave woman, Laura! I don't even want to start sorting out stuff in the laundry room! Safe travels to your husband.

. . . I could never do what he does. I like to go on runs, but driving those things, especially when he has to back it up into some small space towing something 30 or 40 ft., No way!

. . . Yeah, I wouldn't want his job either. It amazes me how people think that something that big can just stop on a dime. Cars cut in front of him and they just don't realise the weight behind the vehicle makes it difficult to make quick stops. And I know what you mean about the place of employment. Some of those drivers are real sickos. They think my husband is strange because he's a devoted family man.

That job sounds truly interesting. I don't know how he does it though, dealing with rollovers and huge disasters. I would think that it would take its toll on a person.

Good luck with Ground Zero (the laundry room)

. . . Actually, he likes it. However when he went down to New Orleans, that stressed him out. He said it was the worst thing he's ever seen.

yHey Laura, I know what you are delving into - the frightening abyss of stray socks, school newsletters, junk mail and the all encompassing and ever-so-dreaded miscellaneous . . . STUFF! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I have so much of that to do around my house too.
You should have called in your request for disaster relief before his other call of duty rang . . . I bet you could use that tow truck now!
Anyway, great job - I bet he has a lot of stories.

Yeah, it's pretty cool driving in it too. I've driven it on a straight stretch of road, but it scared me to death. I don't think I'd make a good truck driver.

. . . Yeah, it was a major pain in the rear, but I finally got it all done. Actually, it's easier when no one is around because when everyone is home, I can't throw nothing away. All of a sudden, everyone's junk becomes to precious to do without. But when I do it when no one else is home. They never miss the stuff.
