Puppy Problems
O.K., so the dog is cute. But the dog is also spoiled rotten already! Training him is going to be a nightmare. I get him down for the night in the laundry room, no problem. Then around 3 a.m. my husband wakes up to use the bathroom, let's Taco out to do the same, and then does he leave the dog in the laundry room for the rest of the night, NO! He lays on the couch with the puppy snuggled up to him and that is the way I find them in the morning. Now my husband says that the puppy's whinning after he brings him in keeping him up is why he is doing this, but I don't buy it. I think my husband is just using this as an excuse to let the puppy sleep with him. The next problem with this cute little devil is that he is chewing all the wrong things. He likes his chew toys, but he also likes to chew his dog food bag apart and he has chewed through the wire that's for the water meter. Now I have to have them come out tomorrow to replace that. I wouldn't have this problem either if my husband would let me put the dog in his kennel box when we are at work, but he thinks it's too confining. Now, my son does come here from his job for lunch every day and he lets the dog outside to go to the bathroom and get a little exercise, so it's not like the puppy would be confined for 8 straight hours or anything like that. I think training the cute little puppy is going to be an uphill battle because he's so small and cute that everyone, especially my husband is spoiling him to death. Funny, I don't recall my husband being so soft on training issues with past pets. He must be mellowing with age. I think I'm going to have to take charge of this situation and put my foot down when it comes to Taco's puppy training or else I'm afraid we will be in for about 14 years of Taco Terror!!!

"14 years of Taco terror." There's a joke in that phrase somewhere. I know it. I just know it.
Sorry your tiny dog is causing problems. Just do what I did to my cat: feed him a huge amount of food so he becomes too obese to do much damage.
I know you need to train dogs but look at that face how can you say no?
The tinier the dog, the more the terror! My parents always had one big dog and one small one -- the small one always ruled the house!

. . . Oh my God, if I let this puppy get fat, his little legs wouldn't be able to hold him up!

. . . That's exactly the problem! He's so tiny and so cute that everyone wants to let him get away with everything. But for his own good, and my sanity, I'm going to have to try to enforce rules.

. . . That's what I'm trying to prevent. There's only one ruler in this house, and I'm it.

I know how that is--these puppies are so hard to resist.
aww come on! How can you say no to that face!!

. . . That's the trouble, you and dad can't say no to that little face. But if you want an obedient dog, you have to.

The Terror of Tiny Town ;) I always preferred big dogs (esp. Labs), though we often had a little one, too. Kittens are a terror, too, if cute as all get out (like puppies). What're the lines? There's huntin' dogs and there's puntin' dogs? Or, do you wanna run with the Big Dawgs or sit on the porch with the little ones? Pets are a trip, though it's been quite a little while since I've had any.
OMG! I tried to feel for you, Laura, but I kept looking into those adorable, innocent eyes and your case fell appart! Are you sure it's little Taco creating these problems??? LOL!
Taco is really cute, but I understand your problem. I'm having a little trouble with one of my two kitties getting into things she shouldn't, but oh, she's so cute! This could become a nightmare if we're not careful... gotta have some rules, and we moms usually end up being the ones to enforce them, don't we? Have a great weekend, Laura!

I'm faced with no choice but to get a dog in the spring. I don't want one, but my wife's going to get one anyway. Your aquarium dog looks so innocent, but as you've described, he's not.
Fourteen years of Taco Terror?
Yikes...
This is why I'm a cat man. ;)

. . . I've had a few big dogs in the past, I prefer the little dogs and this is why; Big dogs, big poops, little dogs, little poops.

. . . No, Taco isn't causing the problems, it is the people that are spoiling him to death that are making puppy training difficult. But I'm happy to announce that my husband is backing off a bit and allowing the puppy training to proceed as I deem fit. So now, Taco is kenneled up when no one is home, which means no more chewing everything in sight. He is also doing well in the housebreaking department. So things are looking up. However, he still ends up sleeping with someone through the night, but I guess you have to pick your battles.

. . . Boy are you right about that one. I've always had to be the one to enforce the rules. Not just with pets, but when the kids were small too. My husband is just a big softy, but that's ok I guess.

. . . Yeah, but he is doing better. Hope you have better luck with training your new dog this spring.
